National Transfer Student Week takes place in the third week of October each year. This year, National Transfer Student Week is October 20-24, 2025.

Transfer Student Week celebrates all that transfer students bring to our campus. Throughout the week we will be holding events, giving away U of M gear, and sharing facts and stories about the Transfer Student Experience.

Transfer students can stop by any transfer week event and enter a drawing to win a U of M Sweatshirt! Students can submit more than one entry if they attend more than one event.

Build and take a free mini-LEGO kit and explore all that The Toaster has to offer! representatives from our academic support and tutoring resources will also be there to answer your questions about how to get academic support.

Transfer Treat Bags with Off-Campus Living

Off-campus Living is giving away treat bags for transfers that include an insulated tote, snacks, swag, and useful resource information. Stop by and grab some goodies!

Celebrate National Transfer Week with the College of Liberal Arts (For CLA Students)

2 - 4:30 p.m. I Room 101, Walter Library

Join us for an event designed just for CLA transfer students! Connect with fellow transfers, enjoy free snacks, and take part in relaxed activities like crafts, games, and more! Peer mentors will be on hand to answer your questions and share tips for making the most of your time at the U. This is a great chance to meet new people, unwind, and celebrate your journey as a transfer student. We can’t wait to see you there!

I am a transfer student from China…When I applied to the school, I didn't think much about it, after all, I don't know much about the school, only the ranking. I know MN is very cold in winter, and many people can't stand it, but I like snowy days, so I have a chance to make snowmen. I didn't know about gopher sports before. I didn't know about American football until I came to school and participated in the welcome week…This semester is my first semester at UMN, and I chose Calculus 1..I have never enjoyed mathematics as much as I do now! I think it may be because I met a good professor that made me like this course even more. I can choose the courses I like here, it's amazing! If possible, I would like to transfer to a mathematics major. It's really cool for girls to study mathematics…if possible, I would like to pursue a master's degree or PHD at this school. I really like UMN!

I am a volunteer at the Fridley History Center museum. I was influenced by a couple of other volunteers who saw my interest in history and communication on display awhile working at the museum. They suggested to me to look into going back to school where I can learn more and build on my knowledge and interests in history and communication. I applied, was accepted and I’m now on my way to complete my strategic communication degree at the Hubbard school.

My son and I moved into a place across the street from MCTC. I started classes at the age of 63. I graduated with 72 credits and started at the University of MN this September. My plans include a major and two minors. The transition was bumpy at first, but I am settling in. It's been a great experience so far. Kudos to the Welcome Week activities. That really helped me out. There are so many people here that want you to succeed, including me! You can do it! Ask for help if you're struggling. I do. Smiles!

Right after completing high school in Thailand, I immigrated to the U.S. in 2023 with my family, carrying with me big dreams of uncovering treatments for incurable diseases and a commitment to serving my community. I continue my higher education at Saint Paul College even though I could barely speak English at that time and could not imagine myself in college due to financial barriers. Fortunately, after a year of resilience and support from Saint Paul College, I earned my associate degree and transferred to the University of Minnesota - a land of opportunity and innovation for biomedical research - where I can pursue my dream with financial support from the Jack Kent Cooke Foundation.

My name is Chantsaa, and I am so happy to have the opportunity to share my transfer story with all of you. My biggest goal has always been to study in the U.S. to earn my bachelor’s degree, so I started learning English when I was in middle school in Mongolia. I am visually impaired. At the School for the Blind, I lived in the dorm, which helped me become more independent. At the same time, I often felt closed off, like I was living inside a box, even though as a teenage girl, I had a strong desire to explore the world...I am always happy I chose Minnesota because I love exploring new places and challenging myself. Washington and Minnesota are very different, and I am grateful to have experienced both. I use my white cane to navigate campus and sometimes get lost, but I always find my way by asking for help when needed. People here are helpful and friendly. I enjoy the lakes during the summer, and I even had the chance to kayak once. I also take advantage of campus resources, including Disability Resource center, professor’s office hours, and mental health services at Boynton.Every semester, I learn something new and challenge myself. Making courageous decisions for your dreams is always worth it, even when it feels scary or difficult. I truly feel that this is the place I am meant to be.

I came to the U from a Massachusetts community college after earning 2 certificates and my Associates in Engineering. My major is Mechanical Engineering, and it was an easy pick to attend the U once I was back living in MN. I love all the clubs like Rocket Team, SWE and ASME. The resources and more diverse student body are fantastic at a larger school!

I previously was taking online classes at University of Arizona Global Campus while I was active duty. I got out of the military in June and decided I wanted to transfer to University of Minnesota Twin Cities campus. It has been a great experience so far and I have met a lot of great people.

I graduated high school in 2019, from La Crosse WI. Right after high school I started going to Western Technical College. I had no idea what I wanted to do in life and was just going to college because everyone else was. When the first year came to an end, it was prime COVID time. I would have to do my second year all online and that was new to me. I was scared and also paying for college on my own so I didn't know if it was worth it to go in the midst of a world pandemic. So, in the beginning of my second year, I decided to drop out and focus on working and figuring out what I wanted to do in my life. My break from school ended up being 4 years long…After I was done at Western, I applied to the University of Minnesota Twin Cities. I got accepted and that's when my transfer journey began. Now I’m a month and a half into the semester at the U and It’s going really well. I'm 24 now and all I have to say is it’s never too late to go get your education. Who cares where everyone else is in their lives, that's their journey not yours. I'm finally happy where I'm at in life and excited to see where this journey will take me.

I’m a first year transfer student at the U! As an untraditional transfer student, I’ve been to two previous universities outside of Minnesota, and always wanted to attend the U of M. I had toured campus back in 2018, but never applied as I was not sure about the major I was in at that point in time (Nursing). It wasn’t until I dropped out of the institution I was in at that time, and transferred to a university in Puerto Rico, where I’m originally from. During my time in PR, I found my love forJournalism & Communications! Fast forward to this past summer, after three gap years, I took the plunge and applied at the U to finish my undergrad degree in Journalism, and have now also been accepted within my desired major! All of this within my first semester of being here! The U has been very welcoming, the students, staff and faculty have helped orient me in ways, I never knew possible. Definitely a warm experience, overall, as I hadn’t experienced this at the institutions I attended previously. My favorite part of it all? There’s so much to do and see, especially within Hubbard School! I’m very grateful I was able to land a spot here, at the U of M!

My educational journey has been far from traditional, but every chapter has prepared me for where I am today, pursuing my prerequisites at the University of Minnesota with the goal of entering the Mortuary Science program...My journey from Pensacola Junior College to the University of Minnesota represents more than a transfer; it represents growth, second chances, and a deep commitment to doing meaningful work. I’ve learned that it’s never too late to pursue a dream or to create a new beginning. I’m proud of how far I’ve come and excited for what’s ahead continuing my education, joining the Mortuary Science program, and building a career that helps families find comfort and dignity in their time of loss.

I attended Winona State University for my freshman year, but it wasn't a great fit in regards to my goal of becoming a sports dietitian in the future. I decided to transfer to the U of M this fall because of the great nutrition program they have here. Since transferring, I have fallen in love with the campus and developed my passion for nutrition through my classes and volunteer position. In addition, the staff and professors at the U have been extremely helpful as I navigate such a transition. My academic advisor made me aware of a volunteering opportunity with Gopher Sports Nutrition. This volunteer position has allowed me to connect with sports dietitians and gain valuable experience in my career of interest at such an early stage. It has been an incredible opportunity, and I have learned so much about the importance of nutrition for athletes. An opportunity like this would have never been possible if I had not transferred to the U!

Starting high school, the thought of attending a big university felt daunting. That’s why I chose to begin my education at a community college. During those two years, I thrived in a supportive environment. Smaller classes allowed me to connect with professors and explore my passion for psychology. Plus, I saved money, easing the financial burden on my family while juggling a part-time job. After earning my associate degree, I began searching for a four-year university. A friend recommended the University of Minnesota, and after visiting the campus, I felt an immediate connection. The vibrant community and strong marketing program drew me in. Transferring to the University of Minnesota has been a fantastic decision. I found a welcoming environment, supportive professors, and friends who inspired me. My journey through community college taught me that taking my time was worth it. Now, I’m grateful to be part of a community where I truly belong.
