National Transfer Student Week

October 16-20, 2023

National Transfer Student Week takes place in the third week of October each year. This year, National Transfer Student Week is October 16-20, 2023.

Transfer Student Week celebrates all that transfer students bring to our campus. Throughout the week we will be holding events, giving away U of M gear, and sharing facts and stories about the Transfer Student Experience.

Transfer students can stop by any transfer week event and enter a drawing to win a U of M Sweatshirt! Students can submit more than one entry if they attend more than one event.

Join Off-Campus Living and Orientation & Transition Experiences at this "crafternoon" event. Drop by solo or with friends to make crafts and with other transfer students and commuters!

Zoom Hang Out for Transfer Students 25+

6 - 7 p.m I Virtual Event I Zoom Link

Join your fellow “older than average” transfer students for a casual Zoom hangout. No formal agenda, Just pop in when you can to say “hi” and meet your fellow transfer students.

Celebrate National Transfer Student Week with a free tasty donut and coffee (or hot cider!). Stop by to learn a bit about transfer students at the U of M and celebrate all that transfer students bring to our campus!

2 - 3:30 p.m. I Walter Library, The Toaster

Build and take a free mini-LEGO kit and explore all that The Toaster has to offer! representatives from our academic support and tutoring resources will also be there to answer your questions about how to get academic support.

Anton

For my first year I attended the University of Wisconsin Eau Claire. While I did enjoy the school it didn't have the size and spirit of a big ten school like the UofM. I had a few friends who went to school at the U, and after my first visit I new I wanted to transfer. Also as an accounting major, I was excited at the opportunity to be a part of the Carlson School of Management. I actually found out that I was accepted to the U while I was visiting, so I read my acceptance letter while sitting in Coffman. I started at the U my second year and now feel like I've always been a gopher.

I transferred to the U of M my sophomore year from my "dream school". After going to this school for a year it was not for me, so I decided to transfer. I was so scared to start fresh because I felt like a freshman all over again. I joined Greek life and instantly found my home. These girls are the definition of true friendship. They showed me genuine kindness and compassion. I am so proud to be surrounded by such strong women every day. They also showed me what it means to be a Gopher. They took me to all of the sporting events on campus. We went to football, volleyball, wrestling, hockey and gymnastics. The U of M has the most school pride I have ever seen and I am so lucky to be a part of it. I am forever grateful to be a Golden Gopher.

Tristan

I started off as a student in biomedical at UW-River Falls. It is a small school and I wanted a bigger feel. I originally wanted to go to med school after I got my undergrad. I decided I didn’t want to do that anymore. I started working out here so I decided to transfer and go into business out here. I have since decided to go back to biology with a focus in animals. I love it a lot more out here than my old college.

I transferred to the U from St. Kate's as a sophomore in 1984. I hadn't visited the U when selecting my college during high school, and after spending time on campus with a Gopher friend, I was hooked! The vibrant, urban feel, large size, and eclectic student body was much more of what I was looking for in a college experience. I ended up taking advantage of what the U had to offer: great campus jobs in research labs, intermural volleyball, hosting a radio show on WRRM (later Radio K), living in the newest dorm, Middlebrook, and studying abroad in Spain. It's exciting to see the resources and energy devoted to transfer students today. I'm entering my 25th year of employment at the U now - and still love the campus energy that attracted me to the U as a transfer student nearly 40 years ago!

Terran

Upon transferring to the University of Minnesota during my undergraduate career, I was very nervous about making friends. I felt that most students likely had their established friend groups and were not looking to branch out more. Once on campus, I found this was not the case. Though it required some effort on my part, I found community and friends readily across campus. Joining clubs and student groups that I was interested in was a great way to meet people and make friends. Additionally, the Transfer Student Network was a large help in finding community on campus. Though it may initially feel uncomfortable to think about community as a new transfer student, small efforts, like joining clubs and attending events, go a long way.

Sunny

I transferred here from Normandale Community College. I originally went to school to become a nurse but decided it was not for me. My husband is a student at the U of M so I decided to look into degrees there as well. When I was looking at other programs to enroll to after finishing my Associates in Community Health Education, I found the Health Services Management degree that fits more into my later career goals in life. The program is also amazing because it mostly can work around my work/family life. So far the UofM has been so welcoming and I couldn't have chosen a better school to transfer to.

Margi

I transferred from a community college after completing my Associate's degree last Fall. I chose the U to complete my Bachelor's degree in Environmental Science. I knew I would fit right in, as I have always loved Minneapolis (and Gopher volleyball). I also knew that the U had a strong community of students, and had a reputable sciences program. It was a rocky transition from mostly online classes at my community college, to fully in-person classes here on campus. Despite this, I knew I chose the right place for me within my first week of being a student here. I am incredibly grateful for the resources available for transfer students, and I couldn't be happier with the support my peers and faculty has given me!

Dayana

This fall semester 2023 is my first semester here at the University of Minnesota and I transferred from MCTC in downtown Minneapolis . I am very excited to be able to participate in more student groups and it is always scary for me to start the process of joining new groups but I hope to make new friends and connections. I am very happy to join the U and to get my studies here as a first - gen, planning on get my B. A in Political science.

My name is Tehya and I transferred to UMN after two years at a small liberal arts school out east. I am from Minnesota and realized how much I enjoyed the Twin Cites and wanted to come back. I love how big UMN is and how many amazing and smart and cool people I have the opportunity to connect with! I am also really impressed with the disability resource center (DRC) and all of the research opportunities available for undergraduates. Suffice to say, I am so grateful for UMN and I am proud to be a transfer student!
